From the Wayne County News, dated Friday, January 27, 1939. Rich Brewer Wiser After Entertaining An
All Night Guest. Visitor Took $23 in Greenbacks, But Later Returned Same After Questioning by
Sheriff Barnett. It is not wise to invite some people to spend the night with you. That, at least,
is what Rich Brewer, farmer of the Simmons Branch community, has decided. One night last week Mr.
Brewer entertained, a young man in his home. In fact, Mr. Brewer even shared his bed with him and
then the next day Mr. Brewer found that his purse containing $23 in greenbacks, was missing.
According to reports Mr. Brewer had the youth arrested, who is said to have confessed to the theft.
He is said to have then taken Mr. Brewer and Sheriff Barnett to the place he secreted the money--in a
hole in a tree near a local blacksmith shop.
