Alice was brought to this country by her mother when she was about one year of age, along with her
brother, Edward, and her sister, Mary. Her father had come to this country first and found a place
for them to live. They came over in a small wooden ship. They got into a terrible storm on the way
over. Her mother sat on the he floor holding baby Alice in her arms, with the two toddlers sitting
beside her. They couldn' t stand up because the boat was rocking so violently. At one point, they
thought Alice would die because she was so sick. As a child and young girl, Alice lived mostly with
her Aunt Mary (Polly) Edwards Mattox. Because the John Edwards' family was so large, it was better
that some of the them lived elsewhere. His family was so poor, that many of the children were raised
by close relatives. Alice developed into a very nice-looking woman, who took pride in looking her
best. She worked in a shoe store before marrying Charles Robert Bumbaugh. Alice was a wonderful
cook. It was said that if someone dropped in for a visit unexpectedly, she could always whip up a
wonderful meal in no time.
