Many thanks to Grace Whale Meneely (Grand-daughter of Ulysses Davis) who wrote to me and corrected
Ulysses Davis' middle name, and provided much of the information for this family.  According to her,
it is Grant.  This allowed me to find him and his family in the census.

According to Grace, Ulysses was a Machinist and a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church.  He was
in Philadelphia on business in 1914 and died of a stroke there.

Obituary of Jessie I. Davis along with two other clippings, contributed by Sharon Coulter, a
ggranddaughter of Jessie Irene Shunk's mother, Margaret Lucy Smith Shunk Haberbeck:

    Mrs. Jessie I. Davis Mrs. Jessie I Davis, widow of the late U. Grant Davis, died Saturday evening at 6:30 o'clock in the home of her sister, Mrs. Meade Helman, Grapeville, in her 64th year. Mrs. Davis was a resident of Pittsburgh and came to Grapeville a week ago to visit her sister. She was a member of the Wesley Memorial M. E. church, Pittsburgh, and is survived by the following children: Grant, Newark, N.J.; Clarence, Mrs. Grace Whale, Mrs. Charles A. Harris, all of Pittsburgh; seven grandchildren; two brothers, Frank A. Skunk (sic), Washington, D. C., and Louis Haberbeck, Crafton, and two sisters, Mrs. Meade Helman and Mrs. George F. Rupp, both of Jeanette. The body is at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Ruth L. Harris, 426 Zara street, Knoxville, Pittsburgh, where funeral services will be helpd Wednesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Interment will follow in the South Side Cemetery. ....... Clarence A. Rupert and Mrs. A. J. Hartman, of Grapeville, and Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Rupp, of Heanette, attended the funeral of Mrs. Jessie I. Davis in Pittsburgh yesterday. Mrs Davis was a sister of Mrs. George F. Rupp and Mrs. C. Meade Helman, both of Jeanette. -- Frank A. Shunk has returned to his home in Washington D. C. after attending the funeral of his sister, Mrs. Jessie I. Davis, of Pittsburgh. ........ Davis Rites Funeral rites for Mrs. Jessie I. Davis, widow of the late U. Grant Davis, who died Saturday evening, were held this week at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Ruth L. Harris, Knoxville, Pittsburgh, with interment following in South Side cemetery. In addition to four sons and daughters, seven grandchildre, two brothers and two sisters, Mrs. Davis is survived by her step-father, Jacob Haberheck, of Grapeville.
Grace Irene Whale Meneely wrote to the Masonic Temple in Philadelphia requesting information on her grandfather Ulysses Grant Davis and received the following dated April 13, 1983: Dear Mrs. Meneely: Re: Brother Ulysses Grant Davis The records in the office of the Grand Secretary show that your grandfather, Ulysses Grant Davis was a member of Franklin Lodge No. 221, held at Pittsburgh, Pa. At the time your grandfather joined the Lodge he was 36 years of age, resided in Pittsburgh and was a Machine Shp Foreman. He was Entered in the Lodge on March 17, 1905, was passed to the Fellow Craft degree on April 21, 1905 and Raised to the degree of a Master Mason on June 21, 1905. Brother Davis remained a member of the Lodge until his death, which our records show occurred January 4, 1914. Masonic records fo not contain any family data, not birth or death place. Therefore we cannot verify some of the information contained in your letter. The above is the total conetnt (sic) of our records. Sincerely, Thomas W. Jackson Grand Secretary by: David C.
