			James M. Provance

	New Geneva, Apr. 30 - James M. Provance died Friday morning, April 29, 1904, at 4 o'clock, very
unexpectedly.  He was a son of Theron Provance, and is survived by five children: Mrs. Dora Mallory
of Greensboro, Mrs. D.M. Davis, Harry and Lewis of this place, and Della of Uniontown.  The deceased
was 56 years old and his sudden death was a shock to his friends and neightbors as he was apparently
in vigorous health.  The funeral will take place Sunday, May 1, at 10 o'clock am.

p. 521  James M. Provance was born in Nicholson township, Fayette county, Pa., March 23, 1849;  was
reared on a farm, and attended the common schools.  At the age of thirteen, he commenced to make his
own living as deck sweeper on a steamboat, which he followed for one year, when he shipped as deck
hand, after which he worked as a fireman for some time.  He was engaged upon the river for about ten
years, when he engaged in mining coal.  Afterwards learned the trade of stone mason.

In 1872 he was married to Mis Mary M. Romesburg, a daughter of Adam Romesburg, who was a native of
Pennsylvania, and of German descent.  Mrs. Provance died Sept. 4, 1887.  To this union were born five
children: Alfrida, Isa D., Della, Harry B. and James L.  Alfrida is married to Daniel Davis of
Fayette County.

Mr. Provance owns a comfortable little home at New Geneva.

Theron Provance, the father of the subject of this sketch, was born in Fayette county Pa., owned a
small farm, and had a comfortable home.  His father, Joseph Y. Provance, was one of the early
settlers of western Pennsylvania, and was a large land owner.  He was of English birth, and came to
America, and settled in Pennsylvania before the revolution, and took part in that war.  He was the
father of twenty-seven children.
